Nathaniel’s Educational Journey
Nathaniel moved to Seattle during middle school following a hurricane in Miami. He attended Madison Middle School, but his eighth-grade year was cut short by the pandemic. Even though he struggled with online learning, he was able to attend classes online and in person during his freshman and sophomore years of high school. Nathaniel eventually stopped going to school. He shared, “I was having some trouble with staying in the loop with it.”
After some time away from school, at 16, he enrolled in the Interagency Academy to work on his GED while also participating in trade programs. He earned his GED and then took another break to work full-time.
Nathaniel was introduced to NWEdA through the Interagency Academy, where he met Clint, his education advocate. Clint helped him navigate college applications and enrollment processes, assisted with getting class materials, and checked in regularly to help keep him on track.
Additionally, workshops offered by NWEdA, as well as Clint's ongoing support, have helped Nathaniel manage his ADHD, develop better organizational skills, and stay motivated in his education.
“Honestly, it [NWEdA] has been helpful with pretty much everything that I do as far”. -Nathaniel
Nathaniel explored various fields, such as welding, and ultimately decided to pursue a degree in business at North Seattle College, which he started this fall. He told us, “I decided to go for a business program, hopefully so that I can do something for myself, whether it's a small business, looking at real estate as a potential option, but mostly it's just that I have the freedom to do something myself.”
When asked about his proudest accomplishments, Nathaniel includes completing his GED and enrolling in college, especially because he originally didn’t plan to continue his education. Additionally, he recently joined our Alumni and Student Advisory Board, where students and alumni contribute to NWEdA's organizational and program decisions, as well as advocacy efforts.
Currently, Nathaniel finds joy in physical exercise, cooking, and learning new things in his business program. He is looking forward to completing college, continuing to learn about business, and eventually opening his own business that supports him financially.
